Mary Alyce Hofsess Retirement Open House

On January 6, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. there will be a retirement open house for MaryAlyce Hofsess, Youth Services Librarian at Pekin Public Library, held at Pekin Public Library.

Lorraine Stotts Retirement Open House

On January 4, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. there will be a retirement open house for Lorraine Stotts, children's librarian at Peoria Heights Public Library. The open house will be held at the Peoria Heights Public Library.

January 4, 2010 Youth Services Meeting CANCELED

Due to budgetary constraints at ALS we are going to offer only four (4) Youth Services Meetings in 2010. We are hoping that small networking groups will begin to form around the system much like those the directors of the libraries attend. A new Young Adult Librarian group is already forming. We will continue to offer the Summer Reading Kickoff, the Spring Fling, a Fall program and the Holiday Craft Share-a-thon. If you have ideas for the Fall program, please contact Angie Green at ALS via email at agreen@alliancelibrarysystem.com or via phone at 309-694-9200 ext. 2108.

Susan Mullen, Librarian at Olympia High School in Stanford has put together a wiki with lots of resources on web 2.0 tools. Check it out at http://olytecheducation.wikispaces.com/.

Sara Fisher, Youth Services Librarian at Alpha Park Public Library is in charge of the Resource Guide for 2011- A Midsummer Knight’s Read. She needs a few more interested people to help on the task force. It involves organizing the submitted ideas and adding a few more to round out a specific section of the manual. NEW YA GROUP STARTING!

Come one, come all YA librarians, full-time and part-time (or even aspiring) to our first meeting of the Young Adult Librarians' Alliance! We'll be meeting at Normal Public Library in the boardroom on Monday, January 11 at 2 pm. This meeting, the first in a series, is intended as a replacement for the now-defunct YA meetings before Youth Services Forum. We'll decide at this meeting how often we want to meet and what we want / need from our time together -- idea sharing? Presentations? Come & contribute your thoughts, because we'd love to hear from you!

Illinois Awards

Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award

The Abraham Lincoln Award is awarded annually to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by participating students in grades nine through twelve in Illinois. The award is named for Abraham Lincoln, one of Illinois' most famous residents and himself an avid reader and noted author. The award is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA).The Abraham Lincoln Award is designed to encourage high school students to read for personal satisfaction and become familiar with authors of young adult and adult books.

Bluestem Award

Sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA), the award is designed for students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list, but not quite ready for the sophistication of some of the Rebecca Caudill titles. Named in honor of Big Bluestem which is the state prairie grass, the award may include both timeless classics and current titles, as well as books that have appeared on Monarch and Rebecca Caudill lists.

In the summer of 2002, several past presidents of ISLMA discussed the need for a K-3 children's book award. The ISLMA Board established a work group to investigate creation of such an award. In April 2003, ISLMA approved the establishment and support of The Monarch Award: Illinois' K-3 Children's Choice Award. The name Monarch was chosen because of its familiarity to K-3 children and to symbolize the growth, change and freedom that becoming a reader brings. The Monarch is designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with children's books, authors and illustrators. The program is open to all K-3 age children in Illinois.

Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award
http://www.rcyrba.org/ The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award is an annual award given to the author of the book voted most outstanding by students in grades four through eight in participating Illinois schools. The award is named in honor of Rebecca Caudill who lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois, for nearly 50 years. The award is given in recognition for her literary talent and the universal appeal of her books which have touched the hearts of many children and young adults. Any school in Illinois with students enrolled in any of the grades four through eight and agreeing to meet the requirements may participate in the program. Any public library in Illinois serving students in grades four through eight (from schools that are not registered to participate) and agreeing to meet the requirements, may participate in the program.

Gryphon Award

The Gryphon Award of $1,000 is given annually in recognition of an English language work of fiction or non-fiction for which the primary audience is children in Kindergarten through Grade 4. The title chosen best exemplifies those qualities that successfully bridge the gap in difficulty between books for reading aloud to children and books for practiced readers. The Gryphon award was conceived as a way to focus attention an area of literature for youth that, despite being crucial to the successful transition of new readers to independent lifelong readers, does not get the critical recognition it deserves. The award is sponsored by the Center for Children's Books at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.

Horn Book Award

First presented in 1967 and customarily announced in June, the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards are among the most prestigious honors in the field of children’s and young adult literature. Winners are selected in three categories: Picture Book, Fiction and Poetry, and Nonfiction. Two Honor Books may be named in each category. On occasion, a book will receive a special citation for its high quality and overall creative excellence. The winning titles must be published in the United States but they may be written or illustrated by citizens of any country. The awards are chosen by an independent panel of three judges who are annually appointed by the Editor of the Horn Book.

Jane Addams Children's Book Award

The Jane Addams Children's Book Awards are given annually to the children's books published the preceding year that effectively promote the cause of peace, social justice, world community, and the equality of the sexes and all races as well as meeting conventional standards for excellence. The Jane Addams Children's Book Awards have been presented annually since 1953 by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and the Jane Addams Peace Association.

John Newberry Medal

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Randolph Caldecott Medal

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott.
